Hellraiser Revival Story Explained: Aidan, Sunny and the Labyrinth

Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival is a rescue story that turns into a con: Aidan Lynch cuts his girlfriend Sunny with the Genesis Configuration, opens a road to the Cenobites, and pays for her freedom with his own flesh — only to learn at the end that Sunny was never a victim to save. She agreed to bear the Hell Priest's rebirth from the start, and both endings hinge on one choice.

Sections 1–2 stay spoiler-light: premise, cast, setting, beats. Everything from "Full Plot" onward is fully spoiled: the Revenant Mother reveal, Sunny's confession, both endings.

What Hellraiser: Revival Is About (Spoiler-Free)

Aidan Lynch (Xalavier Nelson Jr.), a biker gang member, and his girlfriend Yoon "Sunny" Sun-Hee (Leader Looi) come into possession of the Genesis Configuration — a new puzzle box, separate from the films' Lament Configuration. Aidan cuts Sunny with it during sex; answering their lust and pain, the box summons the Cenobites. Their leader Pinhead — the Hell Priest, voiced by Doug Bradley of the first eight films — offers to take Sunny to Hell; she agrees, and Aidan follows to free her from the Cenobites.

That cult is the Scarlet Church, run by Marlowe and his artist-prophet Bruno. It operates beneath a BDSM club, worships Leviathan and the Cenobites as angels, and maims and sacrifices people in the belief that the Rite of Rebirth will turn them into Cenobites — its attempts only produce monsters. Aidan's route shuttles between that compound and the Labyrinth, the Cenobites' dimension ruled by Leviathan.

When and Where Hellraiser: Revival Takes Place

No official source — not the Saber Interactive FAQ, not the game's Wikipedia entry — gives a calendar year for the story, so any date quoted online is a guess. What is documented: a standalone tale — the franchise's first video game, not a film sequel — playing out as one continuous ordeal across two realms.

Realm Locations What happens there
Reality Scarlet Church facility, club, mansion levels, cathedral, Aidan's home Cult escape, heart hunts, the Marlowe fight, the final choice
The Labyrinth Leviathan's dimension, the Field of Souls, deeper passages Sunny's pillar, the box's powers, Aidan's revealed past

The official FAQ puts a playthrough at 8–12 hours depending on playstyle — that is how long the story's "when" lasts in practice; how long the game is compares three sourced figures.

The Story Beat by Beat (Light Spoilers)

Plot order follows the game's published Wikipedia synopsis; puzzle detail sits in the walkthrough hub.

Beat What happens
Prologue The box cuts Sunny; the Cenobites tear her apart with hooked chains and knock Aidan unconscious — see the Prologue walkthrough
Church facility Aidan wakes as the cult's captive, escapes torture chambers and a sex club, and hears Sunny claim she survived
Charlotte's ritual He watches Bruno implant the box in Charlotte's chest; she turns monstrous, he reclaims the box and kills Bruno
The bargain Outside, the Eremite Zora appears; Aidan opens the box, and the Hell Priest agrees to help — for Aidan's flesh "when the time comes"
Field of Souls The Priest leads Aidan into the Labyrinth; there he liquefies Sunny's stone pillar into blood with the box
The hearts He kills Charlotte and the Sister of Mercy, feeding each heart to Sunny as her body rebuilds
Bruno and Marlowe A resurrected Bruno steals the box and presses it into Marlowe's chest; the Priest names Marlowe an ingredient, not an initiate, and he becomes a monster
Cathedral Bruno refuses to fight; Aidan recovers the box, kills Marlowe and feeds his heart to Sunny, restoring her human form

Full Plot: Sunny's Truth and the Revenant Mother

Major spoilers below

Mid-game twist, ending cutscene and both final choices, all given away here.

With Sunny restored, the Cenobites arrive to collect the Priest's debt. Aidan submits and lets Sunny consume his hand — then learns that flesh from the chosen was all she needed; he never had to kill anyone. The Priest explains that the church misread its own ritual: the Genesis Configuration does not transform cultists, it identifies a Revenant Mother — someone with a womb, sufficient will and an unquenchable void.

Sunny gives birth. The Priest kneels over her and dissolves; the Child throws Aidan into the Labyrinth, and when he returns she has delivered an ascended Hell Priest, built for greater sensations and wielding Leviathan's powers of revelation. Sunny then admits the shape of the whole story: she agreed from the outset to give birth to the Priest in exchange for joining the Cenobites, and manipulated Aidan into resurrecting her. When he accuses her of using him, she answers that they used each other.

Sunny, the Hell Priest and every Cenobite but the Fallen then open Leviathan's body and step into the Void. The Fallen offers Aidan the same door; Zora tells him to choose his own destiny.

Both Endings and What They Mean

Everything is decided at the apartment.

Ending Choice What Aidan gets Achievement/trophy
Stay (human) Refuse the Fallen's offer His life, and optimism about building a new one Human After All
Cenobites Accept the Fallen's offer The Void with Sunny — as a Cenobite himself Experience Beyond Limits

Neither ending reunites Aidan with Sunny, which is why guides call them "stay" and "join" rather than good and bad — a tragedy either way (Sportskeeda's endings breakdown). The reload step is in our both endings guide.

Both endings in one playthrough

A final autosave sits at the decision, so you can finish, reload and pick the other option instead of replaying the campaign. Guides call the preceding ritual "Ritual of Rebirth" while Wikipedia's plot summary calls it "Rite of Rebirth" — same event, two namings.

How the Story Echoes Hellraiser (1987)

Clive Barker was consulted on the story from the start, and the game was written in collaboration with the franchise's creator; development drew predominantly on the atmosphere, themes and mythos of Hellraiser (1987) and its 1988 sequel. The echoes are structural:

  • Desire opens the box. The 1987 film tears its door open with appetite and betrayal; here the box answers "lust and pain" in the opening scene, and Aidan's addiction history — plus the reveal that his relationship with Sunny was volatile and abusive — is the same emptiness the Cenobites sell.
  • Pain and pleasure as one currency. The Scarlet Church turns the film's premise into an institution led by a man convinced he will become a god.
  • The maze as damnation. Leviathan's Labyrinth rhymes with the second film's maze imagery, and in the Field of Souls Aidan's hopes are rendered into blood.
  • Bradley's voice, Barker's words. Doug Bradley returning as the Hell Priest keeps the original delivery, and the hidden achievement "We Have Such Sights to Show You" quotes Pinhead's 1987 line outright.

Sunny as willing centre rather than victim is the game's own addition: Barker's films punish people who want too much, and Revival adds a partner who wanted something specific and planned for it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Hellraiser: Revival canon to the Hellraiser films?

No — it is the franchise's first video game: a standalone story written with Barker's involvement, inspired by the first two films rather than adapted from one.

Who is the Revenant Mother?

Sunny. The box picks her out by her womb, her will and her unquenchable void — her apparent rescue is what delivers the new Hell Priest.

Do the endings change anything besides the final scene?

No. Neither depends on collectibles or earlier decisions; both unlock from the same final autosave, each with its own achievement.

Does DLC continue the story?

Not as of October 12, 2026, when no story DLC was announced and no formal patch notes had been published.
